'Hawkeye' Gets The Shaft In "The Avengers"

According to reports, actor Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker") is in final negotiations to play the superhero character 'Hawkeye' in Marvel Studios upcoming “The Avengers” feature, to be directed by Joss Whedon ("Buffy The Vampire Slayer").

For "The Avengers", Renner will join actors Robert Downey Jr. as 'Iron Man', Chris Hemsworth as 'Thor', Chris Evans as 'Captain America', Scarlett Johansson as the 'Black Widow' and Samuel L. Jackson as 'Nick Fury'.

'Hawkeye' debuted in Marvel Comics' "Tales of Suspense" #57 (Sept. 1964), created by writer Stan Lee and illustrator Don Heck. The character joined The Avengers in "Avengers" #16 (May 1965).

"...'Clint Barton' was an orphan, who ran away as a pre-teen to join the circus as a carnival performer, where he was trained in the use of the bow and arrow by the 'Swordsman' and 'Trickshot'. Years later, he saw 'Iron Man' in action and decided to become a costumed hero called 'Hawkeye'. Branded as a vigilante 'villain', Hawkeye meets and falls in love with the 'Black Widow', a spy for the Soviet Union, who tricks him into helping her to steal technology developed by 'Tony Stark', the alter ego of 'Iron Man'. Hawkeye then joins the Avengers after breaking into their headquarters and binding the team's butler, 'Edwin Jarvis'..."

While the character has no superhuman powers, he was trained by Captain America in tactics, martial arts and hand-to-hand combat, excelling in the use of a bow and arrow, using a quiver of customized 'trick-arrows' that incorporate sonics, gas, explosives and flares.
