Toga Party Planned For New "Caligula"

With the success of the Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, ultra sex/violence "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" TV series, comes word that Tinto Brass, Italian director of the 1979 feature "Caligula" is developing a fresh take on his original film that he felt was ruined by producers who removed him from the feature, then inserted hard-core sex scenes to 'spice' things up.
Brass plans to shoot his new feature in 3D, "to revisit an abandoned project about a Roman emperor that was ruined by Americans, and go from there."

Written by Gore Vidal, adapting Roberto Rossellini's unproduced television mini-series, "Caligula" followed the rise and fall of Roman Emperor 'Gaius Caesar Germanicus', aka 'Caligula', starring Malcolm "A Clockwork Orange" McDowell as the Emperor.

"Caligula" is noted as the first major motion picture to feature prominent actors, including actress Helen Mirren, in explicit sex scenes.

"Caligula: The Imperial Edition" was released on Blu-ray January 2009 in North America.
