Sony Pictures has picked up screen rights to the science fiction books by author Jeff Somers, set in the near future where Earth is run by a federation of nations and governed by a council.
Trevor "Hyperion" Sands will adapt the first book, "The Electric Church", published in 2007, following bodyguard 'Avery Cates, forced by the governing police force to kill the founder of a church that converts people by transplanting their brains into (yes) Avatar-like, robotic bodies.
Sands recently adapted the science fiction book series "Hyperion" for Warners.
Other books from Somers are "The Digital Plague"(2008), "The Eternal Prison"(2009) and upcoming "The Terminal State (2010)...
