Focus Features Intl. has acquired director Matthew "Layer Cake" Vaughn's "Kick-Ass" for the U.K., Australia, Germany, Latin America, Austria, Switzerland and New Zealand. Lionsgate holds domestic rights.
The vigilante-themed feature stars Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Mark Strong.
Vaughn’s Marv Films independently financed the film, co-produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B.
Premise of "Kick-Ass" follows 'Dave Lizewski', a New York City high school student and only child of single father 'Greg Willer'. Dave takes an interest in comic books as inspiration to become a real-life vigilante hero, assembling a suit and mask, worn under his normal clothing.
But his first attempt at fighting crime results in a beating and stabbing, followed by him wandering through the streets before being hit by a car. Determined to retain his secret identity, Dave hides his costume before paramedics arrive.
After saving a man in need of assistance, an onlooker catches the scene on a cellphone camera and uploads it to YouTube, turning Dave Lizewski into a new sensation called 'Kick-Ass'.
