Sneak Peek actor Josh "W" Brolin as DC Comics 'weird western' character 'Jonah Hex' in director Jimmy Hayward's upcoming Warners feature, targeting an August 6, 2010 release.
Created by writer John Albano and illustrator Tony DeZuniga, 'Jonah Woodson Hex' first appeared in the early 1970's DC comic titles "All-Star Western" before getting a solo series 1977-1986. Another comic book series was also launched in 2005, with Hex transported to the future (2025).
Hex had battled alcoholism and as an adult saw his mother turn to prostitution to make ends meet. Though he traveled extensively throughout the American West, Hex also ended up in South America and China. At one point he quit bounty hunting, got married, had a son and took up farming, although it did not last.
Hex' facial injuries can be traced back to being sold into slavery by his father to the Apache for safe passage. Jonah saved the chief of the tribe from being killed by a mountain lion, but was betrayed by the chief's son while on a raid. Hex returned years later to challenge the son in a sacred tomahawk battle but the Apache brave sabotaged Hex' tomahawk, forcing him to use his own knife in self defense when the tomahawk broke. The tribe saw this as breaking the rules of the 'sacred battle', sentencing Hex to wear the 'mark of the demon' by pressing a searing hot tomahawk to his face, with his relationship to the chief the only thing saving him from death.
Actress Megan "Jennifer's Body" Fox co-stars in the film as Hex' love interest.
Surly and cynical, Hex is bound by a personal code of honor to protect and avenge the innocent.
