Columbia Pictures has picked up a spec script by Alex Sabeti, adapting author Katherine Kurtz's fantasy novel "Deryni Rising, with Jimmy Miller producing the project via his Mosaic Productions.Debuting in 1970, "Deryni" launched Kurtz's "Deryni Kingdom" series encompassing five trilogies, short stories and reference books.
The first novel is set in the land of 'Gwynedd', one of the 'Eleven Kingdoms', populated by both humans and the 'Deryni', a race of people with inherent psychic/magical abilities who have been shunned and persecuted for centuries.The book takes place within Gwynedd's capital city of 'Rhemuth' and deals primarily with the struggle of 'Prince Kelson Haldane' to secure his throne from the machinations of a Deryni usurper...
