Montreal VFX production house damnfx created 12 minutes of character animation/visual effects for National Geographic's "Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure".

The large-format, stereoscopic film, directed by Sean MacLeod Phillips, produced by Jini Durr, Lisa Truitt and Jack Geist opened in IMAX, IMAX 3D, Real D and other specialty theaters.

damnfx Visual Effects Supervisor Derek Wentworth, Art Director Mark Dubeau and a team of 70 artists/technical staff created 82 visual effect shots for the film, featuring giant reptilian creatures living in oceans during the prehistoric Cretaceous period.

Over 60 different animals were designed/created at damnfx (based on reference materials provided by National Geographic paleontologists) as well as water interactions, bubbles, floating plankton, particulates, interactive lighting and light rays.

"Whether the creatures had fins, paddles, flippers or tentacles, damnfx delivered...", said director Phillips.

Because of the technical demands of the large-format stereo film, damnfx upgraded to faster network/render processors and 27 terabytes of storage space on a Blue Arc server...
