Marvel Kills Off "Captain America"

In a publicity move similar to the short-lived demise of DC Comics "Superman", Marvel Comics 'Captain America' is killed off in his newest comic book issue, when a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse.

Created in 1941 by artist Jack "King" Kirby and writer Joe Simon, an estimated 210 million copies of "Captain America" comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in a total of 75 countries.

The news came as a shock to 93-year old Simon.

"We really need him now," said Simon.

The character 'Captain America' was originally a scrawny arts student named 'Steve Rogers', ineligible for the army because of his poor health but eager to undergo a 'Super Soldier Serum' injection, that made him a paragon of fighting perfection.
