Vampires, Zombies and A Superhero

The Toronto After Dark Film Festival, October 20-24, has added six new features to its line-up of horror, sci-fi and fantasy cinema screenings.

"Our latest batch of film announcements includes vampires, zombies, killer snakes, and a mentally unstable superhero", Adam Lopez, Festival Director, told Sneak Peek.

"These are all perfect films to add to an electrifying film festival just before Halloween."

Thirteen feature premieres will play in Toronto over the five nights of the festival, as well as a filmmaking 'masterclass' with Troma's Lloyd Kaufman, a 'Zombie Walk' through downtown Toronto, and a showcase of locally produced thrilling short films, dubbed 'Canada After Dark'.

The new films added include "Retribution" by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Japan. The acclaimed Japanese horror director joins forces with producer Taka "Ringu" Ichise, in a brand new film, focusing on 'Detective Yoshioka' who investigates a series of crimes, then begins to suffer memory lapses.

"Special" by Hal Haberman & Jeremy Passmore, follows parking enforcement officer 'Les', who begins taking a new experimental drug, gaining the ability to fly, becoming telepathic and able to walk through walls.

"Tokyo Zombie" by Sakichi Sato, Japan, is a 'zombie comedy' about a pair of slackers who try to escape the 'undead' apocalypse. Director Sato appeared in Tarantino’s "Kill Bill".

"Frostbite" by Anders Banke of Sweden, is about a teenage girl who moves with her doctor mother (a specialist in blood research) to Sweden’s far north where the dark nights last seasons.

"Funky Forest: The First Contact" stars recurring characters 'Guitar Brother' and the 'Babbling Hotspring Vixens'. The film is directed by Ishii, best known for his surreal animation work on Tarantino’s "Kill Bill".

"Vengeance", from Phairi Mawrana of Thailand, features giant snakes, poison lizards and flesh-eating wasps in a story that follows a gang of thieves that break out of jail and head for Thailand’s remote northern border. Meanwhile a squad of local cops try to head them off into the heart of an uncharted deadly forest.

The first annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival, featuring horror, sci-fi and fantasy cinema runs October 20-24, 2006, at the Bloor Cinema, Toronto.
